Season 5 (2012)

Breaking Bad was renewed for a final sixteen-episode season. Production of the fifth season is set to begin in early 2012; episode premiere dates have not yet been determined by the network.[36]

Episode titles

Breaking Bad's episode titles typically relate to the events of the episode, a quotation from another source, or a common expression.

Season 1

In season one, the episode names of episode two and three are respectively titled "Cat's in the Bag..." and "...And the Bag's in the River", which is dialogue from the film Sweet Smell of Success (1957). The fourth episode "Cancer Man" is a reference to The X-Files character The Smoking Man (also called Cancer Man), creator Vince Gilligan was previously a writer and producer for The X-Files. The sixth episode "Crazy Handful of Nothin'" takes its title from the film Cool Hand Luke (1967). The seventh episode "A No-Rough-Stuff-Type Deal" refers to the film Fargo (1996), and also reflects how Walt is trying to impose his will on the drug business and hopes not to resort to violence.

Season 2

In season two, the title of episode three "Bit by a Dead Bee" is dialogue from the film To Have and Have Not (1944). The episode names of the first ("Seven Thirty-Seven"), fourth ("Down"), tenth ("Over"), and thirteenth ("ABQ") episodes form a sentence (737 Down Over ABQ) which reveals an event that takes place in the season finale. These episodes all include a mysterious opening teaser in black and white, featuring a scorched pink teddy bear floating in the White's pool.

Season 3

In season three, the third episode title "I.F.T." is the initials of "I Fucked Ted," which is how Skyler tells Walter she'd slept with her boss Ted. The eighth episode, titled "I See You", is a play on words of ICU.

Season 4

In season four, the titles are mostly self-explanatory, though several have double meanings. "Shotgun" refers both to Jesse riding shotgun and to the shotgun of the man who pretended to rob them.

Spanish titles

Several episode titles are in Spanish, a reference to Mexican culture in New Mexico as well as the influence of Mexican drug cartels in the story. "Más" means "More". "Negro y Azul" means "Black and Blue" (cf. the end of the 7th episode where the screen is blue and the background black with the song "Negro y Azul" played). "Caballo sin nombre" means "horse with no name". This is in reference to the song by America, "A Horse with No Name", which was thought to be about heroin and the song itself features heavily in the episode. "Mandala" means "Circle" in Sanskrit. "Abiquiu" is the name of a small New Mexican town where artist Georgia O'Keeffe resided. "Hermanos" means "Brothers". "Salud" means "health", and is traditionally spoken as a toast when drinking.
